How We Met: Jason and I (Emily) have known each other since we were 10 years old since his cousin, Lindy, is one of my best friends. Apparently we always had a crush on each other but never acted on it. We didn’t start dating until Jason moved 5,000 miles away to Hawaii for work—talk about a long-distance relationship!
The Proposal: I asked Jason to be my Sadie Hawkins dance date our sophomore year of high school. We went as friends with secret crushes on each other, but nothing more came from it. We consider that night to be where our story started though, so Jason took me back to the Vestavia Hills High School old gym where the dance was and he proposed. After that he had all of our family and friends waiting at a small park in Liberty Park to celebrate. It was such a thought out, sweet, and special evening. I’ll never forget it!
Favorite Moment: I lost my father to a long battle with cancer in 2008, and the thought of him not getting to be there for my wedding broke my heart. However, my mom surprised me with a few special touches that allowed my dad to be a part of the day. My “something borrowed” was his wedding band, and my “something blue” was his Auburn ring, both tied to my bouquet so that he could walk down the aisle with us. For the father/daughter dance, my mom asked some of my dad’s close friends to step in for him. We laughed, cried and danced to mine and my dad’s song, “Brown Eyed Girl.” I could not be more thankful to my mom for arranging these moments. I know that my dad would have been so proud!
